BIODYNAMIC CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle, hands-on bodywork that can enhance the functioning of many systems in the body, including the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system is comprised of the bones, membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, and is integral to the nervous system, as they work together to nourish and support the entire body, driving the way the body interacts with and responds to the world around it.
BCST may support the release of restrictions, and allow the body to come back into balance. It is also used for preventative health as the therapy helps strengthen the body’s resistance to disease. Various conditions that may respond well to BCST are listed on the home page.
The philosophy of BCST asserts that there is an underlying intelligence within our bodies that is always there from conception. This vital force develops and maintains our organs, tissues and every single cell and process that happens without our conscious awareness. Our hearts beat, constantly pumping blood and nutrients throughout our bodies, disease is fought and new cells are made every day.
As in nature, our bodies are designed to self-regulate and thrive. If we can support them by turning off stress and our busy minds, with nourishment and rest, we will be heading towards a happier, healthier way of being.
In ultimate health the structures in our bodies are aligned and the fluids and energy in our bodies flow freely. Our bodies can have tissue memory stored within them, from physical injuries, trauma or even emotional stress, and these can be holding us in unhelpful patterns of discomfort or dysfunction. Eventually dis-ease can result.
The Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist works holistically, listening to and working with the subtle rhythm of the body’s nervous system, soft tissues, bones and fluids to invite resolution of any stresses and restrictions in a safe way. Without pressure or manipulation to “fix” any issue in the body, while staying in contact physically, we invite the body to slow down, breathe and let go. This also offers the client a chance to observe, and over time they develop belief in their own self-healing ability. Dialogue and reflecting back what the body presents also offers this empowerment, as we find trust and balance in the nature of our own bodies.
The stillness and relaxation that this therapy can offer are more vital than you may realise. They allow the nervous system’s stress response to turn off, inviting your body’s self-healing mechanisms to turn on. Even if just for a short time each session, this can teach your body how to RESET and go back to that restful healing place. With regular sessions, this state can become more of a normal way of being and you will learn how to find it in your own daily life.
It has been said that the biggest factor in change or healing is often the act of realising what it is in us that needs to change, and developing that self-awareness can come with regular BCST sessions.
What a session involves
A BCST session with Julie starts with a relaxed discussion regarding your case history, any concerns and needs. You then lie on a massage table fully clothed and the gentle hands-on component of the treatment lasts for around 30 – 40 minutes.
BCST is incredibly effective because it slows you down and allows you to listen to your body, reminding it how to relax and switch off the stress response. When your body switches over to ‘relaxation mode’ (parasympathetic nervous system) your repair systems can function more optimally, especially the immune, digestive, and reproductive systems. Julie places her hands on one or more areas bringing attention to the body while ‘listening’ to help facilitate the healing process.
A key part of the therapy, and the self-awareness it brings, is dialogue. It helps you stay present during the session so that you are aware of what is happening in your body and any changes that may be occurring. Your involvement, along with the lack of ‘directing’ or manipulation by Julie, can be empowering and can invite your body to work through various layers of tissue memory, allowing it to ‘clear’ what it needs to first. This may take time but ultimately can bring about deeper healing because we are not just treating symptoms but going back to the root cause.
After the hands-on part of the session you can further discuss anything that came up for you during the session or ask any more questions that may have arisen.
You may experience the effects of a BCST treatment on many levels and throughout your whole body and this can keep working for a day or two after a session as your body self-manages the changes. It is helpful to have an open mind and be an observer of thoughts and bodily sensations during this time. It can be supportive to keep a journal of any changes you notice over the series of treatments.
As this is a gentle, gradual yet deep form of healing, initially 3-5 sessions is recommended for optimum results. You may notice change sooner, or it may take longer for your body to respond.
